Preliminary Continuity Task

The preliminary task requires you to produce a piece of film in which a character opens a door, walks across a room and sits down in a chair opposite another character and exchanges two sentences of conversation. There are three continuity princples to observe in tis exercise

  • Match on Action
  • Shot reverse shot
  • 180 degree rule

Match on Action

Match on action is where you follow a action with the camera. For example walking through a door. You can star the clip from one side of the door and just as the open it cut to the other side of the person coming out of the door.

Shot reverse shot

shot reverse shot is a simple camera transition that can make the audience feel more involved and understand what is going on. It is done by having a shot of an object or person looking at the camera the role then reverses and you see what he is looking at.

The 180 degree rule
